Marisa Yow
Marisa Yow
b. Jacksonville, FL
"It was mine; it was the only place I felt I had a voice. I continued because I loved the act, creating something from nothing, and the feeling of fulfillment that I made this, this is mine."
Working predominantly between the territories of drawing and painting, small- to large-scale,Marisa Yow produces works that create a simultaneously visually and emotionally thought-provoking atmosphere."Communication, the ability to evoke an emotional connection with another individual. A shared thought or feeling for the viewer to find commonality within another." Her paintings mainly focus on large-scale figurative works, bear marks that are instinctual, bold,
and lush. Her drawings are often smaller in scale, offering intimacy and warmth.
Marisa employs unconventional compositions and implied narratives to trigger the viewer's imagination. She is constantly creating a dialog that would not just confirm what is observed but would allow questioning about what is not presented. "I draw from my perspective, felt or perceived, of vulnerabilities, familiarities, memories, images, emotions, ideas, and thoughts. As my experiences expand, my thoughts evolve. I only hope to continue to create with an authentic visual voice that others find they connect with."
Marisa grew up in the Jacksonville Beaches area, attended Florida State University, received a BA in Art History and BFA in Painting, and an MFA from Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Currently, she has a studio in Jacksonville's CoRK Arts District and teaches at the University of North florida and Florida State College of Jacksonville. Marisa has been voted one of the Top Nine Best Painting and Drawing Instructors in Jacksonville for three years. She has shown nationally and internationally.
